What is the relationship of iodine and goiter in hyper/hypthyroism?

I am trying to understand the concept of the relationship of iodine and goiter in both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Does there need to be an equilibium of iodine to maintain homeostasis of the thyroid? I think I am understanding deficiency but I am having a hard time making the relationship with too much iodine.
