Stay at a hotel outside the city or in the city?

My family and I plan to drive to Chicago. Do you recommend we stay at a hotel in the city or outside the city? Is it difficult to stay at a hotel outside the city if we want to see the sights of Chicago (Mag Mile, Willis Tower, etc)? The hotels in the city are quite expensive for the four of us and parking fees are beyond expensive.
