Men need your help asap?

So I am in the process of ending a platonic friendship with a guy. Point blank we were moving in a relationship direction which was fine with me but he still has feelings for his ex and can't commit to me so I thought it be better if we just ended the friendship. This happend two days ago. I saw him yesterday at church which was fine and he sent me a text message last night which I am hesitant to respond to because I don't want us to have any contact. Should I respond or leave him wondering. I want to respond but need him to understand its over.
