Soul Calibur 4 Character creation!?

I need to know how to make the strongest character for soul calibur 4 for the tower of lost souls. I make characters all the time and they are never strong enoug to ascend the tower so i am not able to defeat the game. Like proper equipment and the proper different abilities. Much appreciated!
